Dumbarton 5-0 East Fife - Farrell hails 'perfect Saturday' for goal-crazy Sons

Stevie Farrell hailed “the perfect Saturday” as his Dumbarton side secured a first home win of the season by blowing away East Fife.

Goals from Ross MacLean and Gregor Buchanan had the Sons cruising at half-time, with Buchanan on the scoresheet again in the second-half - along with centre-half partner Ryan McGeever and substitute Eoghan Stokes.

It marked Dumbarton’s biggest league victory since defeating the Fifers 6-0 in August 2011, and their biggest home win since blowing away Alloa 5-0 in the Scottish Cup in 2015.

And Farrell was delighted with his players for an almost flawless showing.

He beamed: “You get perfect Saturdays sometimes, and that was a perfect Saturday.

“It had everything. Everything we had asked them to do, everything we have worked on in the past few weeks.

“We’re really playing with a real belief.

“We always know with Gregor Buchanan and Ryan McGeever that we’ll always be a threat from set pieces. They are a big part of the game, and we’ve got to make sure we make them count. We did that today.

“Goal difference is important so I’m delighted with the clean sheet too. It’s easy to switch off but defensively, from the back four to the front two, we were excellent.”

Farrell was forced into a change from the Montrose victory, with the injured Paul Paton replaced by Conner Duthie.

Wearing their striking black away kit, Sons picked up where they had left off at Links Park - as they grabbed an early goal.

Ryan McGeever’s header from Duthie’s free-kick was only parried by Scott Gallacher, with Ross MacLean first to react and steer the ball into the empty net.

Carlo Pignatiello almost added an immediate second as he got on the end of Edin Lynch’s cross, but Aaron Dunsmore’s brilliant clearance denied the Livingston loanee.

Darren Young’s men fired their first warning shot on the half-hour, as Scott Mercer’s wonderful free-kick cracked the bar with Sam Ramsbottom beaten.

However they would find themselves two goals behind before half-time.

Callum Wilson delivered a free-kick from the right and it was met by the totally unmarked head of Gregor Buchanan, who celebrated his second goal in as many games.

The second-half followed a similar pattern, with Sons looking a threat every time they went forward.

Ross MacLean was only denied by the post after a surging run through the Fifers’ defence, before another set piece saw Stevie Farrell’s Sons secure the win.

Again it was Callum Wilson who delivered it, and again it was Gregor Buchanan who shrugged off the East Fife defence to power a header beyond former Son Scott Gallacher.

Joe McKee’s return from injury was another welcome sight for Sons supporters, and he wasted no time in playing a role in another goal.

The summer signing from Queen of the South dinked a corner to Kalvin Orsi at the far post, and he nodded across goal for Ryan McGeever to bullet in his fourth goal against East Fife for Dumbarton.

And the Sons weren’t finished just yet, as another McKee corner this time picked out his fellow substitute Eoghan Stokes, who celebrated his second goal for the club.

Hearts loanee Ryan Schiavone came within inches of adding a sixth, as the free-flowing Sons made Farrell’s first home win one to remember.
