Dulwich stabbing: Murder arrest after man knifed to death following row at convenience shop

Knife victim: Dennis Anderson was said to have been returning from a friend's birthday party

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a father was stabbed to death in south-east London.

Dennis Anderson, 39, died after a row erupted in a 24-hour convenience shop in Dulwich before he was knifed in the early hours of Saturday.

Police were called to Pay Less Food & Wine in Lordship Lane at 2.35am but Mr Anderson could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene half an hour later.

The Metropolitan Police said on Wednesday evening a 24-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to a south London police station.

A post-mortem examination held on Tuesday gave Mr Anderson’s cause of death as an incised wound to the neck, police said.

Friends of the victim paid tribute to the painter and decorator who had a teenage daughter. Luke Roche, 29, from Dulwich, described him as a “very good man”. He said: “Dennis had been at a friend’s birthday party last night and must have been coming home. But I don’t know what happened.

“He loved his daughter. He was a family man and very popular, no one had a bad word to say about him. I honestly can’t think of anyone he’d had a fight with. He just wasn’t part of that life.”

A woman who asked not to be named said: “He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. He doted on his daughter and was very loving.

“He used to party in the pubs in Lordship Lane. He was best friends with a load of boys who still live around here and all went to primary school together. They’ll be devastated.”

Detective Inspector Domenica Catino, who is leading the investigation, said police were still appealing for witnesses despite an arrest being made.

"Although we have made an arrest, we still need to hear from anyone that may have been in the area on Sunday morning,” she said. "Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could really help our investigation.

"We are aware of speculation around the motive for this attack and can now confirm that the suspect approached Mr Anderson in an off-licence shop before an altercation broke out and the suspect delivered a fatal attack.

"Our top priorities now are to support Mr Anderson's family."

Witnesses should call the police on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
