Meghan Markle and Prince Harry join Instagram and gain thousands of followers in minutes

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched their own Instagram account.

Called @sussexroyal, their page will highlight the causes Meghan and Harry support and the work they undertake as royals.

Their first Instagram post read: "Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal - Harry & Meghan."

Within six minutes of being set up, the account had over 8,000 followers.

The couple are both patrons of a variety of organisations, with the Duchess serving as patron of the Royal National Theatre, The Association of Commonwealth Universities and Smart Works.

Prince Harry is patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, the Rugby Football Union and the London Marathon.

Meghan closed her personal social media accounts after the couple became engaged in November 2017.

She closed her lifestyle blog, The Tig, soon after she and Harry started dating a year earlier.

The Queen posted on the Royal Family Instagram for the first time in March during a visit to the Science Museum.

The couple are also expecting the birth of their first baby this month.
