MADURAI: The Pandiya Vellalar Street in Madurai, which falls within the Madurai Smart City area near Meenakshi temple, is awaiting a revamp for more than three years. The delay in re-laying of the road after it was dug up for under-ground drainage (UGD) works three years ago has irked traders and residents.
The road extends to about half a kilometer and connects South Marret Street with the South Masi/ West Masi Street junctions. It is dotted with residences and shops. “This road was dug up for UGD works three years ago but it was not re-laid after that and we have been struggling with the uneven road since then,” said K Shanmugam, a trader.
S Alagesan, a resident from the area, said that now, the manholes on the street that were constructed as part of the new UGD system, have started overflowing and they have to jump over ditches filled with sewage water. “If it rains, the problem becomes worse as we have to look out for pieces of broken tiles mixed with the debris dumped on the roadsides besides the overflowing sewage from manholes,” said U Abudahir, another resident. With the area around the Periyar bus stand under construction, people who want to go towards Thiruparankundram take short-cuts through this road to reach the Madura College bridge and the heavy traffic during weekdays adds to their woes, said residents.
Madurai Corporation sources said that this road would be re-laid soon as the pipeline and UGD works on this stretch have been almost completed.
