Duffy frustrated in striker search as Dumbarton assistant leaves for Rangers

Dumbarton assistant manager Craig McPherson has left the club to take up a coaching role at Rangers' academy, whilst Jim Duffy has admitted he's being frustrated in his attempts to add to Dumbarton's firepower.

McPherson, known as Hagi due to his likeness to Romanian icon Gheorghe Hagi, initially joined the Sons under Stevie Aitken in September 2018, leaving a month later when Aitken was sacked.

However he was back in the dugout a fortnight later as assistant to Duffy who he had previously worked with at Greenock Morton.

And Duffy was quick to pay tribute to his right-hand man.

He told the Dumbarton FC website: "I am sorry to see Hagi go, especially having worked with him for so long, but this was a great opportunity for him and we could not stand in his way.

"Myself and the club will now begin the process of seeking out a new assistant and we know we have to move fast on this front."

Meanwhile the Sons gaffer has revealed he is continuing to be frustrated in his quest to add to the Sons’ attacking options after being forced to play defender Ryan McGeever up front for the final minutes of Saturday’s defeat to Peterhead.

He said: “I think everybody in the country is looking for a striker. Manchester United with all their millions are looking for one, and they are few and far between.

“Most teams now only play with one striker so therefore you don’t have combinations around too readily and too easily.

“But we’ve made calls to try and address the situation – unfortunately so far it hasn’t materialised.”
