Dudley fraudster admits swindling more than £136,000 from the insurance company he worked for

Fraudster Damien McMenzie has admitted swindling more than £136,000 from the insurance firm he was working for.

The 36-year-old was employed as a household claims handler for Tesco Underwriting Ltd when he pocketed the funds by submitting false insurance claims.

At Newcastle Crown Court, McMenzie pleaded guilty to fraud between March 1 2015 and July 31 2019, to the value of £136,425.81p.

The court heard he "abused his position as a household claims handler" and that he did so "by authorising payments to his own account".

Full details of the case were not revealed during a short hearing and McMenzie was told he will have to wait until next year to be sentenced.

He was released on unconditional bail until January 25, when he will learn his fate.

McMenzie, of Weetslade Crescent, Dudley, North Tyneside, also faces proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act, in which prosecutors will try to claw back his ill-gotten gains.

Matthew Purves, defending, said McMenzie is having to fund his legal representation as he and his wife earn too much to qualify for Legal Aid.
