RALEIGH, N.C. _ Jeff Skinner's goal was big, much-needed.
Jordan Staal's goal was timely, tying the score.
Justin Faulk's goal, on a bomb of a shot, gave the Carolina Hurricanes the lead.
But the Canes couldn't finish it off Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks at PNC Arena, losing 4-3 in a shootout on Corey Perry's goal.
Jakob Silfverberg's goal with 4:48 left in regulation gave the Ducks a 3-3 tie. Faulk had a shot hit the post with less than two minutes remaining, and the game soon was headed to overtime.
Sebastian Aho had a breakaway for the Canes in OT but was denied by goalie Ryan Miller, playing his first game for the Ducks. Victor Rask had another, and Miller again made the stop.
Perry had the only shootout goal as Miller stopped Justin Williams, Jaccob Slavin and Aho.
Skinner's seventh goal of the season came on a power play with 6.6 seconds left in the first period, allowing the Canes to escape the first period trailing 2-1 after a messy first 20 minutes.
Staal and Faulk scored in the second as the Ducks, a night after a 4-1 road win over Tampa Bay, playing without captain Ryan Getzlaf, appeared to be tiring. Faulk's goal was his first of the season, typically on a hard, heavy shot with 1:27 left in the period.
The Canes took a 3-2 lead into the third, but the Ducks, playing the last of four road games, found enough energy to make a push.
The Canes' play in the first period was sloppy _ "unacceptable," as Faulk put it. Too many loose passes, not enough focus.
But whatever was said at the first intermission in the Carolina locker room, the Canes came out a different bunch, making better decisions in all three zones.
It hurt the Ducks that Getzlaf was unable to go after the first period. Getzlaf, who averages more than 22 minutes of ice time a game, had a puck ride up and stick and into his face 23 seconds into the game but was able to get in seven shifts.
The Ducks' 2-0 lead after the first could have been 3-0 _ Perry had a shot go off the metal. Andrej Kase scored Anaheim's first goal on a blast from the right circle after a faceoff outside the Canes' zone, and Derek Grant picked up an easy one.
Taking advantage of a Canes turnover off the wall in the Carolina zone, Grant suddenly had the puck and beat Darling one-on-one with 2:46 left in the first.
But Skinner's power-play goal changed everything. Going to the front of the net, the winger held his ground as the puck bounced around the crease and into the net.
The Canes had a near-miss midway the second when Williams was open in front, only to lift the puck over Ryan's head and over the net. But the Canes continued to push, trying the score on Staal's goal _ Aho with a perfect setup pass as he circled the net _ and moving head on Faulk's bomb of a shot with 1:27 left.
The Canes were not sure if forward Teuvo Teravainen would be able to play Sunday after Teravainen injured his right elbow and shoulder Friday against St. Louis. Teravainen was in the lineup and had the primary assist on Faulk's goal.
