Ducks lackluster in 5-1 loss to Canadiens

MONTREAL _ Paul Byron, Tomas Plekanec and Jeff Petry provided goals for Montreal and the Canadiens erased an early deficit in handling the Ducks, 5-1, on Tuesday night.

Max Pacioretty and Chris Terry also scored in the third for the Canadiens. The Ducks (17-12-5) got a goal from Andrew Cogliano but put nothing else past Montreal goalie Carey Price, who needed to make only 12 saves.

Cogliano scored his ninth goal of the season to put the Ducks on the scoreboard first as he surprised Price with a quick shot off a faceoff play. But there was very little the fatigued Ducks had to offer up against the significantly more energized Canadiens, who finished with a 34-13 shot advantage.

Jonathan Bernier got the start in goal for the Ducks but the veteran once again struggled when it came to playing against his hometown team at the Bell Centre. Bernier made 29 saves but allowed long-distance goals to Perry and Pacioretty in a second straight shaky outing.

Montreal took advantage of Ducks defenseman Josh Manson getting caught up ice, tying the score in the first as Byron put in a rebound of a Petry shot on a 2-on-1 rush up ice.

Plekanec one-timed a Byron pass on the power play in the second for his second goal in 20 games and fourth of the season. Petry made it 3-1 when he managed to get a wrist shot from inside the blue line past Bernier off the post and into the net.

The Ducks, who've won consecutive road games just once this season, end their six-game trip Thursday in Ottawa.
