Duck found trapped in barbed fishing line as SSPCA urge fishers to be more careful

The Scottish SPCA is urging fishers to take their discarded fishing line home with them after a duck had to be rescued.

The merganser duck was found in Lochmaben in Dumfries and Galloway entangled in a fishing line which had a barbed hook.

Inspector Janet Proudlock successfully rescued the animal and removed the line.

A fish can be seen caught to the duck as officers believe this is what attracted it to the wire in the first place

The SSPCA is now pleading with people to take all discarded fishing tackle and line home with them where possible.

Or alternatively to use barbless hooks which are more wildlife friendly as water birds and other creatures can shed these more easily.

The SPCA animal helpline can be reached on 03000 999 9999 if an animal is spotted in distress.
