Duce Staley on whether Josh Adams needs to change his running style

A lot has changed since Josh Adams somehow led the Philadelphia Eagles in rushing during the 2018 NFL season. After the Eagles traded for Jordan Howard and drafted Miles Sanders, Adams is somewhat of a forgotten man in the teams’ plans at running back. While Adams had an impressive rookie season after going undrafted, his 511 yards were the lowest rushing yards for a running back that led the team in rushing since the 1991 season.

Adams had shoulder surgery in the offseason and has been sidelined for most of the Eagles OTAs. The Eagles assistant coaches met with the media on Monday and when asked if Adams should maybe contemplate changing his running style, Duce Staley had this to say.

For Adams, making guys miss isn’t the problem, nor is shedding tacklers. In fact, despite not starting for the bulk of the season, Adams was among the best in the NFL at shedding ball carriers per Pro Football Focus.

Adrian Peterson: 45 (T-1st)
Saquon Barkley: 40 (8th)
Ezekiel Elliot: 37 (T-9th)
Josh Adams: 20 (T-33rd)

With the Eagles likely to carry four or maybe five backs, the question has to be asked, where does Adams rank in a pecking order that will likely also include Wendell Smallwood, Boston Scott, and Donnel Pumphrey after Howard, Sanders, and Clement?
