Dubliners describe ‘apocalyptic’ scenes in city centre as nightclubs reopen

This weekend marked the reopening of nightclubs across Ireland, and understandably thousands flocked to their favourite venues for a long-awaited sense of freedom.

Pubs and bars enjoyed the return to normal trading hours while other nightlife venues, that were closed for the guts of 19 months, welcomed back customers.

One curious bystander took to the internet to see if anyone could give him the low down on how packed town was, and some of the accounts that came in were both expected and shocking.

The Reddit user wrote; “Was there any carnage in Dublin last night? After the excitement of the video of the queue for Coppers I'm dying for episode 2.”

One person responded to the post saying: “To say town was wall-to-wall jammers is an understatement. I've never seen it that busy even pre Covid!

“Absolutely packed, there were huge queues for practically every nightclub I could see. Most smoking areas looked to be jammers as well.

“Apparently the queue to get into Coppers at one point was a 2-hour wait?? Honestly, would you be bothered really?

“I remember walking through at around 10 and there were already people, scuttered out of their heads, passing out on the side of the road. No social distancing, masks etc.

“If last night was anything to go off I'd say the case numbers are going to absolutely skyrocket!”

Another said: “My Dad's a taximan, rarely does nights anymore but he headed out about 1 to see what the story was.

“He was home by 2 and said it was like an apocalypse.”

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Dublin did not report any trouble overnight on Friday and told the Irish Mirror there were “no significant incidents” related to crowds in town this Bank Holiday weekend.
