Dubliners amazed after whale spotted swimming in River Liffey ahead of Storm Lorenzo

A whale has apparently been spotted swimming around the Liffey close to the opening onto Dublin Bay.

The creature, which is believed to be a minke whale, was seen around lunchtime today by Stenna Berth in Dublin Port.

It is around 20 ft long, Dublin Live reports.

The type is known to grow up to 23 ft long and is distinguished from others by a white band on each flipper while they tend to live for 30-50 years.

The most likely reason it was in the river was to feed with a local worker telling RTE he's never seen one come in before.

Jimmy Murray said he'd sometimes spot basking sharks but the marine mammal's presence is a first for him.

Incredible footage taken by a member of Stella Maris Rowing Club also shows the beautiful creature breaching the water in front of the famous Poolbeg chimneys.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has put out an appeal for video footage and asked people to get in contact with them on their Facebook.

They said: "An unusual sighting of a whale inside Dublin Port has been reported to IWDG. We are currently reviewing available photos and video footage to confirm the species of this animal.

"However, if anyone in the area has sighted it and has any additional photos, videos or information about it we would appreciate if you could let us know!"

It's not the first time an unusual animal has been spotted in the Liffey and the bad weather forecast may have a role to play.

Last year, a dolphin was seen in the area near the Citi Bank at North Wall Quay during Storm Diana.

The video was shared by Darren Farrelly who spotted the mammal.

The DSPCA revealed that the weather has possibly affected its sonar, causing it to make its way into the river.
