Dublin Zoo to hold competition to name baby gorilla born earlier this month

Dublin Zoo have announced that they will be holding a competition to name the new baby gorilla born earlier this month.

The cute little ape, whose sex is still to be determined, was born to first-time mother Kafi and father Bangui on April 1.

The doting mum has been keeping her child close to her chest since then but did venture out into the zoo's Gorilla Rainforest this week to meet the rest of the troop.

Zoo officials said: "Dublin Zoo’s newest resident, a baby western lowland gorilla, has been busy experiencing the Gorilla Rainforest for the first time this week.

"Mum Kafi and baby are both going from strength to strength and the rest of the troop are excited to welcome a new troop member.

"The sex of the baby is still to be determined; it may be a number of weeks before Kafi lets her baby go for a check-up.

"Once the team have determined the sex, there will be a naming competition to name the little one."

Western lowland gorillas originate from the dense rainforests of Central Africa and are classed as critically endangered in the wild.

The numbers of these primates living in the wild is expected to fall by over 80% between 1980 and 2046 as deforestation, commercial hunting and the highly contagious Ebola virus threaten their survival.

Team Leader of the African Plains at Dublin Zoo, Helen Clarke-Bennett said earlier this week that the new birth is a "great step forward" for the critcially endangered species.
