Dublin Zoo posts update on whereabouts of monkey seized in Finglas today

Dublin Zoo has released an update on the whereabouts of the monkey that was seized with drugs and guns in Finglas today.

The animal, whom gardai have called 'George', was recovered in a series of stings targeted at an organised crime gang in Finglas.

Dublin Zoo has confirmed that the monkey is not currently in their care and has been taken in by the DSPCA.

A spokeswoman said: "The monkey seized today in Finglas is not being taken care of at Dublin Zoo and is currently with the DSPCA. "

When it was seized, the monkey could be seen at the back of a metal cage.

Sitting on a white blanket, the small black animal looked startled and frightened.

Gardai have arrested two men under the Offences Against State Act and they can be held for a maximum of three days.

A source said: "This is a big hit against Organised Crime in the FInglas area - a .357 magnum revolver, a scorpion machine gun and another sub machine gun. There is also €100,000 worth of cocaine.

"This operation was heavily intelligence led and is a big strike against a group of young gangsters."
