Dublin Zoo fans encouraged to help name newborn African rhino

Fans of Dublin Zoo are being encouraged to help name the newest addition to its animal kingdom - a baby rhino!

On this week's episode of 'The Zoo', fans got to share the moment that Ashanti the southern white rhinoceros gave birth to a beautiful new calf.

And the new addition weighed a whopping 50kg at birth!

The lucky winner will not only get the honour of naming him but will also receive a family day pass to visit Dublin Zoo when it reopens.

As southern white rhinoceroses are originally found in Eastern and Southern Africa, Dublin Zoo has asked that people please suggest names of African origin.

You can submit your entry at www.dublinzoo.ie/competition.

This is Ashanti’s seventh calf and becomes the newest member of the seven-strong herd (also known as a crash) in the African Plains. (Patrick Bolger)
