Dublin won't lose out on five-in-a-row due to complacency says Jim Gavin

If Dublin's historic drive for five charge flounders on the championship rocks this summer, it won't be complacency that does for their bid at immortality.

The Blues lost three Division 1 games in the league during the spring and didn't contest the league final for the first time since 2012.

A chink of light, perhaps, for the chasing pack that hope to end this period of utter dominance by the Blues under Jim Gavin.

But the Dubs supremo insists that complacency won't lead to a drop in standards as Dublin attempt to achieve a feat no county team has previously managed to complete.

“From just working with the Dublin footballers, that's not a matter that we need to focus in on," stressed Gavin.

"We select players in. If a player isn’t there for the right reasons and doesn’t want to apply himself to be his best for the county of Dublin, we’ll get another player in.

Jim Gavin reveals he would love to see Diarmuid Connolly return for the drive for five

“We’re lucky that way. And I think most inter-county managers are – everybody is doing their best.

“And the great thing about the sport we play, everybody is there by choice.

"There's no contracts - it’s representative sport at its purest level.

"That’s guys representing their parishes, their communities and then ultimately being a club player and being able to represent your county, and the pride that it brings to that club.

“That’s unique in Gaelic sport, that’s unique in all our field sports that we have in Gaelic Games. And that’s why it’s so special.

“Players are making the choice to be there, and the same way with management teams and backroom. And if we perceive a player isn’t there for the right reasons, he just won’t be there".
