A Dublin woman has been appointed as the first Irish traveller to join Seanad Eireann.
Eileen Flynn, who grew up in Labre Park in Ballyfermot and now lives in Ardara, Donegal, was appointed by Taoiseach Micheal Martin.
It has has been praised as an important step in "acknowledging diversity" across Ireland.
Speaking to Miriam O'Callaghan this morning on RTE Radio One, the 30-year-old said it was "the most amazing phone call I ever got in my life".
The former Trinity and Maynooth College student, who qualified as a community worker, has been an activist for more than a decade.
Martin Collins, Pavee Point Co Director said: "This appointment is significant in highlighting the importance of the Traveller voice in Irish society and in the importance of acknowledging diversity.
"Pavee Point has lobbied for a long number of years for the Taoiseach to appoint a Traveller to Seanad Eireann as an acknowledgement of the need for diverse voices in our political system.
"We hope that this Government continues in this mode of action and implementation of real positive change that is desperately needed by Irish Travellers."
