Dublin weather today: Storm Brendan set to hit Ireland as Met Eireann warns of coastal flooding

Storm Brendan is set to hit Ireland bringing with it strong gale force winds and heavy rain.

A Status Orange wind warning is in place for all counties including Dublin.

Met Eireann has warned of coastal flooding due to a combination of onshore winds, spring tides, and storm surge.

A spokesperson for the national forecaster said: “Storm Brendan will bring extreme winds and heavy rain today. Status Orange weather warnings in force for all areas with status Red warnings in operation for the coast.

"Winds may reach stronger levels locally and for limited time periods in the early afternoon.

“Gale force southerly winds will extend to all areas during this morning, with severe and damaging gusts. Heavy rain will extend from the west, thundery at times. There will be coastal flooding due to a combination of onshore winds, spring tides and storm surge.”

The wind warning is in place starting 8 am until 3 pm today with southerly winds of gusts of 100 to 120 kmph expected.

But it’s not all bad news as things are expected to calm down a little during the afternoon.

The forecaster said: “Clearer conditions, with squally showers of rain and hail, will follow during the early afternoon, with the ongoing risk of thunder. Winds will veer southwesterly with the clearance and ease somewhat. Highest temperatures 7C to 10C.”

Tonight will be cold with temperatures of as low as 1C but it’ll be mainly dry with just isolated showers.

Tomorrow will see some isolated showers in the morning giving way to cloudier conditions with rain.

It’ll be a cold day with temperatures of 3C and 5C.

“Tuesday night there'll be showers on coasts for a time but otherwise it'll be dry and clear. There'll be a fresh southwest wind and temperatures will fall to 1C or 2C.

“Wednesday will be a clear day with sunshine and showers, the showers frequent along coasts but isolated elsewhere, carried eastwards on a fresh southwest wind.

“Temperatures will be between 6C and 9C. Cloudy will increase from the southwest, bringing rain overnight widespread and heavy for a time.

“Rain will clear to showers on Thursday and the fresh southerly winds will veer southwesterly. Current indications suggest Friday will be mainly dry, although there is a signal for a showery spell across the northern half of the country.”
