Dublin weather today: Met Eireann warn of gale force winds with long spells of rain

The city has been battered with rain and storms all week and it looks like another grim day is in store with Met Eireann warning of gale force winds.

A Status Yellow gale warning was issued by the forecaster this morning on Irish coastal waters from Howth Head to Wicklow Head.

The north to northeast winds will occasionally reach gale force 8 on coastal waters with showers and longer spells of rain forecast for Friday morning.

The showers will become increasingly isolated later in the day and it's expected to brighten up in the afternoon although it will remain windy with maximum temperatures of 14 to 16C.

There will be more isolated showers this evening but they will die out and it will become dry and clear overnight.

The forecaster has a little bit of better news for the rest of the weekend with Saturday being largely dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells.

It will remain windy with temperatures of 14 to 16C.

The weather will remain settled on Sunday with the best of the sunshine expected in the morning.

It will remain cool for this time of the year with temperatures of just 14 to 16C.

Looking ahead to next week we can unfortunately expect more rain with the weather experts saying conditions are likely to be "unsettled".

Here's how the national forecast is looking:

Monday: "Dry in most areas to begin on Monday. Mostly cloudy over western half of the country, with patchy rain and drizzle pushing in over Munster and Connacht during the morning, persistent near Atlantic coasts later.

"Drier and brighter in the east at first, but thickening cloud will bring patchy rain and drizzle here too during the afternoon and evening.

"Still rather cool with maximum temperatures of just 14 to 16 degrees."

Tuesday: "Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the east gradually clearing eastwards and brightening up later in the day.

"Bright or sunny intervals in the west with scattered showers. A little milder than previous days with maximum temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in light to moderate southerly breezes veering westerly."

Wednesday and Thursday: "A lot of uncertainty at present, but overall conditions are likely to be unsettled with spells of rain extending from the Atlantic in a disturbed southwesterly airflow.

"Temperatures are signalled to be closer to average, however, with tropical origin air in the mix."
