Dublin weather forecast: Nights of near freezing temperatures on the way with wintry showers

There's a chilly week in store for Dublin as temperatures plummet to near-freezing with plenty of grim wintry showers on the way.

Today will be dry with patchy cloud and sunny spells with highs of 12 to 13C before rain spreads from the west early this evening.

The rain will ease off by tomorrow morning to leave a cool, bright and mostly dry day although showers will develop during the afternoon.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Met Eireann say the nights will be very cold with temperatures slightly below normal for this time of the year.

Here's what the national forecast says we can expect in the coming days.

Monday night: "Showery outbreaks of rain will increase along the northwest coast and extend across the north and west of the country with showers becoming more isolated elsewhere with clearer spells developing towards dawn. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8C."

Tuesday: "A few scattered showers are likely to develop however in the afternoon along eastern coasts. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with moderate northwest wind veering northeasterly during the afternoon."

Tuesday night: "Cold and mostly dry, however cloudier along the east coast with the risk of isolated showers. Lowest Temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees with a risk of some grass frost."

Wednesday: Mostly dry with good sunny spells in most areas, however, the risk of few scattered showers along eastern coasts will persist. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees, in light to moderate northeasterly breezes.

Wednesday Night: "It will be a dry night with a few mist and fog developing in the west with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in mostly light southeast or variable breezes."

Thursday: "While it will remain dry over much of the country through the day, starting with some good sunny spells, cloud will increase from the southwest as the day progresses. Patchy rain or drizzle will develop along southern and western coasts through the afternoon with rain extending from the Atlantic to western coasts during the evening hours. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in light to moderate southeast winds."

Thursday night: "Drier elsewhere with some clear spells in Ulster and north Leinster. Lowest temperatures dropping to 5 or 6 degrees with clear spells otherwise holding at 7 to 9 degrees elsewhere in mostly moderate southeasterly breezes becoming fresh at times in Munster."

The outlook for next weekend isn't great, with current predictions saying it will remain cool with blustery showers interrupting occasional sunny spells.
