Met Eireann is warning of dramatic -3C temperatures as they forecast "wintry weather" towards the end of the week.
Thursday will start off cold with sunshine and heavy showers, "some of hail and possible thundery and becoming increasingly wintry in the afternoon and evening".
Temperatures on Thursday night will dip well below the zero mark with "sharp frost with icy patches" rocking the country into Friday morning.
They added: "Friday will continue cold with heavy showers or longer spells of rain moving southwards over the country. Some of the showers will be wintry with a risk of hail and thunder."
Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said there will be some wintry showers, but mostly on higher ground, and said lying snow is unlikely.
However a combination of rain, sleet and snow could potentially hit some lower areas at times.
He explained: "An interesting setup in the weather this week. Charts show Atlantic ridge with Jet Stream dropping South and cold air plunging down from North. Low system on Friday could see some wintry showers but mainly on high ground. Stay up to date with weather forecasts this week.
"This means it will get cold but don’t expect lying snow. It’s very difficult to forecast snow in these setups but it is most likely any snow will be on high ground Thursday into Friday. There could be a wintry mix in some lower areas though with rain, sleet and snow for a time."
Here's how today is looking for Dublin:
Monday: "This morning will start off dry in Dublin with patches of mist and fog, which will gradually clear. Rain and drizzle will move southwards over the region later this morning. There'll be further patchy rain or drizzle this afternoon. Amounts will be small. Highest temperatures of 10 or 11 degrees with light westerly breezes increasing moderate to fresh."
Tonight: "Clear spells will extend southwards over the region and it will become cold and dry with clear spells and some patches of mist and fog. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees with a touch of frost in sheltered areas."
