Dublin weather: Met Eireann warn of -32C 'polar air mass' as other expert speaks of snow chance

Met Eireann have warned a cold air system is heading to Ireland and will bring some unusual conditions.

The "polar maritime air-mass" has temperatures of less than -32C at around 5.5km above the surface.

Weather experts explained that this freezing cold system above warm seas creates a "deep convection".

And this will likely bring some heavy showers, hail and even lightning.

A forecaster said on Tuesday: "A cold polar maritime air-mass lies over Ireland. The chart shows temperatures below -32C at around 5.5km above the surface.

Today in Dublin will see sunny spells and highs of 10C which will dip to 1C overnight with mist, fog and frost forming overnight.

Here's how tomorrow is looking according to Met Eireann:

Tomorrow: "Dry and bright with some good sunny spells. Afternoon highs will be around 10 or 11 degrees Celsius in light westerly breezes."

Thursday night: "Cold and dry on Thursday night with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees generally with frost forming, but less cold where low cloud, mist and fog prevail. Light southeast or variable breezes."

Summary: "Largely dry and bright for the rest of the working week with night-time frosts and fog patches. Becoming milder and more unsettled from the south over the weekend and into early next week."

Weather Expert, Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly, also spoke out about the chance of Ireland being hit with snow because of this "polar air mass".

He said: "A few people asking about chances of snow next week or the week after.

"It’s 10 years since the famous winter of 2010 and the cold end to November and snowy December so it can happen but trying to forecast it this far out is just silly reason."

He added: "In the short term it will be cool for the rest of week with lots of nice sunshine but also frost at night in some areas. It looks likely to turn milder and a little unsettled again from the weekend."
