Dublin weather: Met Eireann predicts 'heavy' thundery showers to hit this weekend

Met Eireann has forecast that "heavy and thundery" showers are set to continue throughout the weekend, with Dublin to be as hot as Lanzarote as temperatures soar to mid-twenties.

There will also be spells of sunshine and temperatures as high as 26 degrees. Today will be mostly dry in the capital with a chance of heavy showers.

It's set to be warm and humid with highest temperatures of 21 or 22 degrees in moderate south to southwest winds. Tonight it will stay cloudy and humid with isolated patches of light rain and drizzle, with mild temperatures from 17 to 18 degrees.

The good weather that we've seen earlier in the week seems set to take a U-turn with heavy rain set to dominate the weekend. Met Eireann has also ruled out heatwave-like conditions, stating that “it will stay unsettled for the weekend and into next week with outbreaks of rain or showers, potentially turning heavy at times”.

Meanwhile, a new heatwave has been reported off the coast of Ireland and the UK. The system has been described as "one of the most severe marine heatwaves on Earth" but only our seas are affected and air temperature over land is not being impacted.

Saturday

Tomorrow will be largely dry, very warm and humid. However, there is the chance of an isolated patch of light rain or drizzle. After a cloudy start, sunny spells will develop through the morning. Highest temperatures of 25 or 26 degrees in moderate southerly winds.

Saturday night

Cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, turning heavier and more persistent in the west and southwest later in the night. Mild with temperatures not falling below 13 to 16 degrees in moderate southerly winds.

Sunday

A dull and wet start to the day with rain becoming widespread and some heavy or thundery downpours possible. The rain will clear eastwards later, with scattered showers and sunny spells following from the west. Highest temperatures of 17 degrees in the west to 23 degrees in the east with moderate to fresh southerly winds, veering westerly.

Sunday night

A mix of clear spells and scattered showers on Sunday night. Cloud will thicken from the west later on. A cooler night with lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in a light to moderate westerly breeze.

Monday

Generally cloudy with scattered showers, though more persistent rain will spread from the west through the afternoon and evening. Cooler with highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees. Rather breezy too in moderate to fresh southwest winds.
