Dublin weather: Met Eireann forecast 20C temperatures for capital with Ireland set for warm and slightly wet days ahead

A gloomy beginning to Sunday here in Dublin, but things are set to brighten up as the mercury rises.

We're looking forward to temperatures of up to 20C today in the capital.

And the sun will shine, with rain holding off for to give us a nice and dry finish to the weekend.

There will be some wind, coming from the west, but that will calm later in the day.

Met Eireann says: "Today will be a dry day with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees. Westerly breezes will be mostly moderate or fresh in strength, later falling off light.

"Tonight will be dry under broken cloud with light southerly breezes. A few mist patches forming. Lowest temperatures 5 to 7 degrees Celsius with light variable or southerly breezes."

As for the week ahead, temperatures are predicted to remain pretty high throughout - reaching 22C at their highest.

There will be some patches of rain at the beginning of the week, but they won't be here for too long with mainly sunshine expected.

Met Eireann says there are positive signs as we head into the end of the week, with "very warm for May" conditions on the horizon for the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Here's what the forecast predicts for the week:

Monday

Monday morning will be dry with sunny spells. However, cloud and patchy drizzle will move in from the west during the afternoon and evening. Humid with highest temperatures of 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. Southwest winds will be moderate, occasionally fresh in strength.

Mild and humid in most areas on Monday night with a little patchy light rain or drizzle in places and some mist and fog in parts too in just light westerly breezes. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees Celsius generally, though a little cooler in the northwest with lows of 7 or 8 degrees.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be dry in most areas with light westerly or variable breezes. Cloudy and misty at first with the odd spot of drizzle. However, it will brighten up with warm spells of sunshine. Highest temperatures will range 14 to 21 degrees Celsius, best values in inland parts of the southeast.

Wednesday

Wednesday morning will bring some rain and drizzle to the northern half of the country, clearing to give a mostly dry afternoon with some brighter spells gradually developing. The southern half of the country will stay dry all day with early mist and fog clearing to give spells of sunshine. Little or no wind on Wednesday and max temps will range 16 to 22 degrees.

Rest of week

The rest of the week ahead looks to be warm or even very warm at times for late May. There will be a good deal of dry weather overall with spells of sunshine. Some rain or drizzle may occur at times too, with this most likely in northern and western parts of the country.
