Dublin weather: Met Eireann break silence on potential 'Spanish Plume' 28C HEATWAVE hitting Ireland this summer

Storm Hannah brought red, orange and yellow wind and rain warnings to most of Ireland as the weather took a drastic turn over the weekend.

Now, it seems that things are about to improve greatly with news of a 28C "Spanish plume" hitting the British Isles during the summer.

Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said that scorching temperatures and a big a heatwave could arrive here  as early as May as warm air blows in from Spain and Portugal in the next few weeks.

He said: "28C would not be a surprise later in May, with warm air expected to arrive from southern Europe, known as a 'Spanish plume'."

Met Eireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly said that it is likely that Ireland will see temperatures of 20C during the summer, but it is impossible to predict exact weather this far in advance.

Turning down the heat on the reports in Britain, she told Independent.ie: "What the Met Office is looking at is seasonable trends based on observations of the stratosphere

"It's looking at probabilities of what could happen, but you can't say the second of June will be a fine and sunny day - that's nonsense.

"We have the same climate every year. Our summers are 20C at times with prevailing south-westerly winds. You can only predict the weather five days in advance, but that depends on what the situation is at that time of the forecast."

What is a Spanish plume? It is a weather pattern in which a plume of warm air moves from the Iberian plateau or the Sahara to northwest Europe and countries like Ireland and England.

This weather pattern can lead to extreme high temperatures during the summer months.

Today's forecast is a little less exotic with rain and cloud expected around the country.

Met.ie reports: "It will be mostly dry today with just scattered outbreaks of rain but it will stay rather cloudy. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees, coolest in the east and warmest in the midlands and west with moderate south to southeast breezes.

"Early tonight rain will arrive in the west and then spread across the country overnight. Lowest temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees in light to moderate southeast breezes."
