Dublin weather forecast: Wet and windy St Stephen's Day in store for shoppers and race goers

Shoppers and race goers are advised to wrap up warm and wear rain gear with a wet and windy day in store for the capital.

Thousands of bargain hunters will hit the city's stores early this morning while punters will flock to Leopardstown hoping to get lucky at the annual Christmas Festival.

But it's looking like there's a miserable day in store with Met Eireann forecasting wind and rain for most of the day.

The rain will clear by midday and there's a chance of some bright and dry and bright weather developing for a while.

There will then be further outbreaks of rain later in the day with fresh and gusty southeast winds and highest temperatures of 11 or 12C.

The rain will continue into the evening but it's expected to become dry but stay cloudy overnight with highest temperatures of 6 to 7C.

Tomorrow is looking a bit more promising as it will remain dry and breezy with limited bright spells and temperatures of 11 to 13C.

The weekend is shaping up to be quite dry with temperatures higher than normal for this time of year.

The national forecast for Saturday reads: "Breezy with fresh southerly winds, which may increase strong in some exposed coastal areas.

"A lot of dry weather is expected, but it will be generally cloudy.

"Some rain may affect parts of the northwest coast through the day and overnight.

"Dry otherwise. Highest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees. Mild overnight with lows of 8 to 10 degrees."
