Dublin weather forecast: More thunderstorms on way as Met Eireann warn of flooding risk

It's August, it's the weekend and it's still summer. That's the good news over with.

Dublin's weather for Saturday and Sunday doesn't make for happy reading however, unless you're a fan of rain.

Met Eireann are forecasting a fairly wet day, with thunderstorms bringing the threat of flooding over the day.

Sports fans should bring raincoats.

Here's what the weather experts are saying Dubliners can expect for the weekend:

Today (Saturday)

We can expect "heavy scattered showers today, with further thunderstorm activity expected and a risk of some flooding," the Glasnevin climate gurus warn.

Thunder and lightning

They go on: "Highest temperatures of 19 or 20 degrees and quite breezy with moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly winds veering northerly by evening."

Tonight

Further heavy showers or longer spells of rain are tipped for Dublin tonight, with lowest temperatures of 12 or 13 degrees, in moderate northwest winds.

Tomorrow

Sunday is expected to be "fresher and cooler", Met Eireann predicts, though it won't be as rainy.

The experts add: "Showery rain will slowly clear southwards in the morning. Drier and brighter conditions will follow with isolated showers through the day.

Top tips for coping with hayfever

"Highest temperatures of 17 to 18 degrees. Winds will be light to moderate northwesterly."

Looking ahead nationally, next week looks like it will be a little dryer, so there is (sun)light on the horizon. Here's what Met Eireann say:

Monday:

Many places will start out dry on Monday with sunny spells, but scattered showers will develop in Atlantic coastal counties from early morning, spreading elsewhere by the afternoon.

Some of the showers will possibly be heavy with a risk of thunder.

Highest temperatures a little below average for the time of year, ranging of 14 to 17 degrees in light to moderate westerly breezes.

Tuesday:

Met Eireann say there's some uncertainty in the details for Tuesday but current indications point to a cloudy day with patchy outbreaks of rain for much of the south of the country.

Drier and brighter further north. Winds look set to veer around to the southwest, which will allow temperatures to return somewhat closer to average.

Wednesday and beyond:

Wednesday and Thursday look set to be mixed with scattered showers and sunny spells. Winds will be light westerly and afternoon highs in the late teens.
