Dublin weather forecast: Met Eireann snow update with wintry showers predicted for New Year

Dubliners have woken up to a light dusting of snow on the last day of 2020 and there are more wintry showers on the way as we ring in the new year.

After the frosty start this morning, New Year's Eve will be breezy with scattered showers which will become more frequent in the afternoon and will turn wintry on the Dublin mountains.

Temperatures will be between 4 and 6C but it will feel much colder due to fresh and gusty northerly winds.

The showers and wind will ease overnight as temperatures plummet to -1C with frost forming.

New Year's Day will remain cold although it will be mostly dry and bright with sunny spells and the chance of just a shower or two.

It will turn even colder tomorrow night with widespread frost and more wintry showers across the country.

The freezing weather looks like it will remain in place heading into next week, according to the national forecast.

Here's how Met Eireann say things are looking for the weekend and into next week:

Saturday: "A mix of bright spells and scattered showers - the showers mostly of rain, but occasionally wintry on high ground.

"Another cold day with highs of just 2 to 5 degrees in a light northerly breeze.

"Very cold Saturday night with a widespread sharp frost. Dry and clear in most areas with a few showers affecting coastal regions. Lows of +1 degrees near coasts to -4 degrees inland, in light northerly winds."

Sunday: "Frost will be slow to clear on Sunday morning.

"Then a dry day with crisp winter sunshine. Highs of just 1 to 4 degrees with a light to moderate northerly breeze. Cloud will build on the east coast later in the day.

"Sunday night will be cold with lows of +2 to -4 degrees, coldest in the midlands and west."

Next week: "Staying cold and mostly dry for the early to middle days of next week, with a northeasterly airflow becoming established.

"This will bring the risk of showers to eastern coastal counties, with drier conditions further west.

"Maximum temperatures by day will remain in the low single figures, generally 2 to 5 degrees, with widespread frosts each night."
