Dublin weather forecast: FIVE days of subzero temperatures as freezing winter snap continues

Met Eireann has warned of FIVE consecutive days of subzero conditions as the bitterly cold winter snap continues.

The mercury is set to dip as temperatures will range between -3C to -2C on most nights all week.

But there is an end in sight as the national forecaster said that "temperatures will increase to more normal levels for the time of year" at the end of next week.

Today will start off cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain continuing into the early afternoon.

Temperatures will be of 5C to 7C.

However, the mercury is set to dive to as low as -2C tonight with frost and fog expected.

Here's the forecast for next week:

Sunday

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A cold and frosty start on Sunday with fog gradually clearing. A largely dry day with just some well-scattered showers. Mainly cloudy but some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of just 4C to 6C degrees with light variable breezes.

NATIONAL OUTLOOK

Sunday night

"Rain will extend over parts of Munster and Connacht with scattered showers continuing over along other coasts.

"A cold night with widespread frost, lowest temperatures of -3C to 0C generally but milder in the southwest with the rain. Light southerly or variable breezes will allow dense fog to form in places."

Monday

"The rain will clear southeastwards during the morning leaving a cold and largely dry day with some sunny spells and some scattered showers, mainly along northern, western and eastern coasts. Highest temperatures of 2C to 6C in light northerly or variable breezes."

Monday night

"Another very cold night with prolonged clear spells. A few isolated showers will occur on coasts becoming more frequent later in the night.

"Frost and fog will set overnight with lowest temperatures of -2C to +1C in light to moderate northwesterly breezes but freshening on coasts."

Tuesday

"A cold and bright day with good sunshine. A few isolated showers over northwestern coasts but dry elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 6C to 9C moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, strong on coasts."

Tuesday night

"Showers will continue along northern coasts overnight but dry further south with good clear spells which will allow frost and fog to develop again. Lowest temperatures of -2C to +3C with frost and fog developing in places as the winds ease."

Wednesday

"Cold and largely dry for the morning but towards the afternoon, a band of persistent rain will feed in from the west, gradually extending across the country during the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 4C to 9C.

"Light westerly breezes will back southerly and increase light to moderate. A clearance to showers will develop in the west early in the night with rain continuing in the eastern half of the country. Lowest temperatures of -2C to +3C."

Outlook

"Current indications suggest an Atlantic regime will take hold for much of the week bringing more unsettled conditions but temperatures returning to closer to normal values for the time of year."
