Dublin weather: Expert says risk of 'Beast from the East' event rising in major update

Ireland could experience another Beast from the East-like event due to a sudden warming event this month.

A Sudden Stratospheric Warning is when polar stratospheric temperatures rise up to increases of about 50 °C over the course of a few days which affects the jet stream, which in turn influences our weather lower down (in the troposphere). Some extreme snow events have been connected to the surface effects of sudden stratospheric warnings.

Speaking about the possibility from another Beast from the East, weather expert Alan O'Reilly said: "Latest weather models showing risk of SSW increasing but remember any impacts on our weather are uncertain and if it does impact our weather it would likely be towards the end of this month or early into March."

Today will be mostly dry with sunny spells and light winds. The highest temperatures of around 7 or 8 degrees.

Tonight will start off clear but cloud will build with patchy light rain or drizzle developing. Temperatures will hit the lows of 0 to +2 degrees with frost in places.

Tomorrow will be mainly dry and it will be rather cloudy overall with patches of light rain and drizzle at times. The highest temperatures would be around 9 to 11 degrees.

There is no further forecaster for Dublin but here's what the national outlook says:

Friday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Little change Friday night, it'll be mainly dry for most with isolated patches of light rain or drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly breezes. Some mist and hill fog will develop.

Saturday and Sunday

"Similar conditions on Saturday and Sunday, both days will be mainly dry and rather cloudy. There'll be patchy light rain and drizzle at times and the sun will come through at times too.

"Highest temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees in light to moderate southerly breezes. Little change in the weather overnight, temperatures will fall to between 3 and 6 degrees."
