Dublin weather: Bizarre 'La Nina' phenomenon hits Ireland this week as Met Eireann forecasts major change after warning

Met Eireann have forecast a big change to weather in the capital this week as the bizarre 'La Nina' phenomenon is set to hit our country.

It occurs once every couple of years, disrupting normal weather patterns and causing havoc for conditions around the world.

The event may affect Ireland as the north Atlantic jet stream intensifies bringing "cool and unsettled conditions" with it.

The National Forecaster shared a map on twitter of the bizarre climate change showing an intense blast of the jet stream hitting Dublin.

Met Eireann said: "A La Niña event has been declared, how does this affect us? La Niña does not always impact our weather but it can intensify the north Atlantic jet. A strong jet over Ireland can bring cool, unsettled conditions."

And there are plenty of indications that these conditions are set to hit over the next week.

The capital is just off the back of a status yellow rain warning too which brought persistent and heavy rainfall of 25 to 40mm overnight with many places hit with flooding.

Here's how the next few days are looking ahead of La Niña coming to Ireland:

Monday: "It will be a cloudy and wet start to the day with outbreaks of showery rain developing during the morning. Rain will die out by morning clearing to brighter spells with a chance of an isolated shower during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 11 to13 degrees Celsius in moderate and at times gusty westerly winds."

Monday night: Showers or longer spells of rain will affect much of the country. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11.

Tuesday: "It will be breezy with widespread showers, some of which will be heavy. There will be some dry and sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds. Showers will continue on Tuesday night, mainly confined to northern and western areas. Drier elsewhere with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees, in a moderate westerly breeze."

Wednesday: "It will be another showery day with sunny spells. Showers will ease through the afternoon and evening. Cool with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with light to moderate westerly breezes."

They added: "Current indications are that showers will continue on Wednesday night and Thursday. However, there is potential for wet and windy conditions spreading from the southwest overnight Wednesday and persisting into Thursday.

"Cool and showery conditions will continue to the end of the week and into the weekend."
