Dublin and Kerry’s All-Ireland football final replay on September 14 will be the 14th time that a second day out has been required to crown the champions.
It will be the eighth time that Kerry have been in a final replay and the first since 2000. Of the previous seven, Kerry have won five.
Dublin’s two previous final replays were in 1894 against Cork, which they were subsequently awarded after a dispute, while in 2016 they edged Mayo out at the second time of asking, the last time that a final ended in deadlock.
There were eight All-Ireland football final replays up to 1952 but only five in the intervening 66 years.
1972 - Offaly 1-13 Kerry 1-13. Replay: Offaly 1-19 Kerry 0-13.
Offaly were the reigning All-Ireland champions seeking their first ever Championship win over Kerry but were forced to a replay by Mick O’Dwyer’s equalising point.
They handed Kerry a record drubbing next time out though with Willie Bryan dominating Mick O’Connell and Paddy Fenning scoring the game’s only goal from distance. It was O’Dwyer and O’Connell’s final Croke Park outing.
1988 - Meath 0-12 Cork 1-9. Replay: Meath 0-13 Cork 0-12.
The counties had met in the previous year’s final, with Meath winning, and their rivalry turned particularly sour over the course of their two meetings in 1988.
Brian Stafford scored a disputed equaliser to earn Meath a replay and despite the early sending off of Gerry McEntee, they eked out a one-point win in a bad-tempered game that drew scorn from then GAA president John Dowling.
1996 - Meath 0-12 Mayo 1-9. Replay: Meath 2-9 Mayo 1-11.
Mayo looked to be well on their way to a famous win only to be reeled in by Meath, who kicked a bizarre equaliser through Colm Coyle, whose hopeful punt bounced over the bar.
A mass brawl at the start of the replay saw Coyle and Liam McHale sent off and Mayo were edged out by Brendan Reilly’s late winning point.
2000 - Kerry 0-14 Galway 0-14. Replay: Kerry 0-17 Galway 1-10.
Kerry built commanding seven-point lead the first day out only for Galway to come back and almost snatch a winner.
The replay was the first All-Ireland final ever to be played on a Saturday owing to a clash with the International Rules first Test. Declan Meehan scored a wonder goal for Galway but Kerry pulled clear with the help of impact sub Maurice Fitzgerald.
2016 - Dublin 2-9 Mayo 0-15. Replay: Dublin 1-15 Mayo 1-14.
Two freakish own goals gave Dublin an early foothold but Mayo stayed in touch and kicked the last three points to earn a replay.
They surprisingly dropped goalkeeper David Clarke for the replay in place of Robert Hennelly, who had a nightmare and conceded the decisive penalty converted by Diarmuid Connolly.
Cillian O’Connor missed a late free which would have forced extra time.
