Dublin Twitter users react as people are questioning if the Luas is free

Dublin Twitter users have been reacting as people are questioning if the Luas is free in Dublin.

Validators are on the platforms at Luas stops all over the county meaning this mode of transport it is in fact not free.

But it seems the joke has gone a bit too far as “the Luas is free” has been trending on Twitter.

It’s all gone off the rails as both the Luas Green Line and Luas Red Lines have been said to cost nothing. But a woman called Sally has been responding to many of the false accusations on the social media app.

One man asked: “Hey, is the Luas free?”

Sally responded: “No Luas is not a free service. You must purchase a valid ticket to travel.”

Another said: “On the Luas right now, ticketless and free. what are ye gonna do, charge me?

“Don’t worry if you pay for the Luas by accident the inspectors check your ticket and give you a refund in cash on the spot.”

Sally tweeted back: “Hi Thomas, If you fail to present a valid ticket to an inspector you will be issued with a standard fare notice.”

A Dublin Bus parody account tweeted: “Great to hear that our colleagues over at Luas have scrapped tickets and are no longer charging for the service! Hopefully we can do the same soon too!”

But Sally confirmed: “A valid ticket is needed to travel on Luas.”

The parody account later tweeted: “Be nice to Sally you f**king degenerates.”

Other people also got on board the trend and tweeted: “The men of 1916 died so Ireland could be free, like the Luas.”

“In Ireland we don't say "free", we say "Luas" and I think that's beautiful.”

“If an ‘inspector’ gets on a Luas and asks for proof of payment you should be a good Samaritan and get them the help they need, they are clearly extremely confused because the Luas has and always will be free.”

“Charging for the Luas was only ever a Failte Ireland guideline.”

“The Dart is free also. Sometimes you need the ticket to go through but most of the time it's wide open.”
