Dublin TikTok user unearths 'ancient girl code' language 'Backslang' with hundreds remembering the schoolground game

An Irish TikTok user has gone viral after unearthing an "ancient girl code" language known as "Backslang".

Dublin woman Jennifer Kiely's video describing the mysterious language believed to be developed by school kids and asked if her followers remembered it.

In the video Jennifer explains to everyone what "Backslang" is and where it originated.

She said: "So if you're from Dublin, Ireland, me and my sister were just talking earlier and were kind of wondering if 'Backslang' was still alive.

"So 'Backslang' is kind of a little language, kind of mad talk that somebody made up in Dublin."

She gives her followers a number of examples of the language leaving many people bewildered.

It is believed 'Backslang' was a popular language among teenage girls in many different parts of Dublin, and indeed all over the country.

Some different local variants existed, but the main one, according to Urban Dictionary, involved saying "a word for each syllable and add an 'uvag' between each of them."

In the video Jennifer teaches people how to say phrases such as "can you turn the light on", "yesterday was Sunday", and "dinner is done".

Several people in the comments were amazed that someone as young as Jennifer had the ability to speak the language.

One commented: "Seriously, you are way too young to know this. I'm 42 and can speak it fluently aswell. Well done to you."

While another said: "I'm from Cork and there is only about 10 people I know who can speak it.

"Sometimes we still speak it to each other just to confuse everyone."
