Dublin tide warning for Sandymount Strand as pair of people get stuck

The public has been issued with an important reminder about how common tidal cut off is at one Dublin beach after a pair of people were stuck at the popular spot.

Tidal cut off is a regular occurence at Sandymount Strand and yesterday Dun Laoghaire's branch of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked with a rescue from the beach.

Along with Rescue 116 they made it to the scene and the people who were stuck were then airlifted to safety with no injuries reported.

As a reminder to the public the coast guard said to always check the tide times before heading out for a walk and ensure there's plenty of time remaining for a return journey - especially around Sandymount Strand, where the tide comes in fast.

They said: "This morning the stations volunteer crew launched our inshore lifeboat after a report from the Irish Coast Guard that two people had been cut off by the tide on Sandymount Strand

"Irish Coast Guard - Dun Laoghaire and Rescue 116 where also tasked to the scene.

"On scene R116 airlifted the people to safety with our lifeboat crew standing by in case anything changed. Once the people were safe the lifeboat crew were stood down and returned to Dun Laoghaire lifeboat station.

"Tidal cut off at Sandymount Strand is a common thing and can catch anyone off guard. Please always check the tide times before going for a walk and ensure you have plenty of time for your return journey. The tide on Sandymount strand sweeps in fast filling up tidal pools and holes leaving isolated sand bars.

"If you are in danger or see anyone in danger please always call 112 and ask for the Coast Guard!"
