Dublin teacher shocks students by 50-minute commute travelled in bizarre way

A Dublin teacher started his students' day off in an amusing fashion on Monday after turning up for school in an usual manner.

Dermot Finn, an art and learning support teacher, decided instead of his usual cycle to work he would take to the water.

The 44-year-old rose early Monday morning, put his kayak in the water at 7am and was in class at North Wicklow Educate Together secondary school by 8:30am.

The eco-friendly teacher told Dublin Live the trip had been in the pipeline for a while now.

Mr Finn said: "It's something I've talked about doing for a while now, I'm really into sea kayaking and there's been a bit of a joke between me and other teachers basically saying 'you'd never do it'.

"Everything lined up this week and a friend of mine is actually leaving the school so I thought it would be a nice way to cheer him up.

"It's about a 50 minute journey on the water from Killiney to Bray so I was out at 7am to make 8:30am class, it was tight but I got there.

"It's a bit of eco and green idealism and I thought I'd give the students a bit of a laugh too - they seemed to enjoy it."

The teacher said the sea route won't be a once off but with the weather set to worsen in the coming months he'll stick to the bike mostly.

He added: "Jumping in a kayak is a different ball game, the sea is far from a safe place but conditions were perfect Monday.

"It was a great way to start the day, I'm very privileged that I have the option that I can do something like that. Most people don't have the choice and have to travel through traffic to work."

The active teacher said his actions are also to encourage young students to be more green with his school placing a particular emphasis on that.

Dermot added: "Our school is very into being green and how be can leave a better footprint, I'd always be trying to get people to cycle and do what they can.

"I cycle every day myself, I have two small twins so I just want to leave something better for them."
