Dublin swimmer's lucky escape as emergency services rush to Dalkey incident

A swimmer was winched from the water and airlifted to hospital after getting into difficulty in Dalkey earlier today.

The man got into difficulty while swimming near the Vico bathing area at the south Dublin swimming spot shortly before 4pm.

It's understood the man got into difficulty in the water and a member of the public alerted the emergency services.

The Coast Guard, along with Dun Laoghaire RNLI, responded and the swimmer was winched into Rescue R116 helicopter.

Members of Dublin Fire Brigade and the National Ambulance Service along with local gardai were also involved in the rescue operation.

The man was airlifted by the Coast Guard to Beaumont Hospital.

A garda spokesperson said: "At approximately 3:45pm on Thursday, Gardaí and the Coast Guard were alerted to a man in difficulty in the water in the Dalkey area.

"The man was taken from the water by members of An Garda Síochána and was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment of his injuries."

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard is urging jet-ski users to stay safe in the water over the bank holiday weekend.

The Coast Guard responded to 18 jet ski incidents in April and May, which included 12 complaints of jet skis entering swimming areas.

Jet ski users are being urged to respect the safety and wellbeing of other water users and remain vigilant at all times encroachment into swimming areas.

Roger Sweeney, from Water Safety Ireland, said: “Just as the public expects road users to comply with laws that keep people safe, jet ski users should ensure that they are compliant with local bye-laws, approved zones and speed limits.

"Responsible behaviour is essential for people’s safety and peace of mind.”

And the Coast Guard’s Operations Manager Micheal O’Toole said: ‘We would like to thank all members of the public for their continued safety efforts on or near the water as we approach what is expected to be another busy June bank holiday weekend.

"Please at all times take time to plan your activity, ensure that it is safe to do so and ensure that somebody ashore is either monitoring your activity or knows what time to expect you back."
