Dublin street closed and frightened residents left hours outside as army and Gardai deal with suspected pipe bomb

A Dublin street was shut off by throngs of Gardai and Army members after an urgent warning was received about a suspected pipe bomb under a van in the area.

Frightened residents of a quiet Sallynoggin street were abruptly awoken by Gardai in the early hours of Monday morning who had the difficult news of informing them that their lives were in danger.

As many as 20 Gardai were deployed to the area with army personnel also called to deal with the urgent situation.

One of the residents fearing for her life, who wished to remain anonymous, told Dublin Live of her horror.

She said: "I was woken up around 1:15am to Gardai knocking on my door to tell us all that we had to leave our homes.

"They said there was a suspected pipe bomb under a van near our homes.

"The army were even called on and around 20 Gardai stormed the area."

She added: "We were on the street for hours and were all very frightened. We didn't know what was going on."

A spokesman for the Military told Dublin Live that after hours of examination, the device was deemed a hoax.

A Garda spokesman added: "We were called to an incident at Sallynoggin at approximately 12.45am on May 4.

"A call was received that a suspect device was present and the Explosive Ordnance Squad was called in.

"Upon examination of the device, it was found to be nonviable."

He added: "No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing."
