Dublin South West Sinn Fein stood down following nomination of Paddy Holohan for Mayor

The Dublin South West organisation of Sinn Fein has been stood down following the nomination of former MMA fighter Paddy Holohan for Mayor of South Dublin County Council.

Members are understood to have been told that the decision was made at the weekend to suspend the party activity in the area following a review of the nomination.

Councillors and serving TDs have been told to continue their work for constituents and from their offices, but that there will be no local meetings or political activity.

A meeting will be held on Saturday, June 11 to assess the situation.

Sinn Fein leaders have previously said that they were not aware that a decision had been made locally to nominate Mr Holohan for the role of Mayor.

Fianna Fail's Ed O'Brien was elected as Mayor of the council, with Fine Gael's David McManus elected Deputy Mayor.

Mr Holohan had previously been suspended in January from the party after comments made on his podcast.

It is unclear when his suspension was lifted, but it emerged last month that he had been reinstated when his nomination for Mayor of South Dublin was put forward.

Among the comments he made were that the country needed to be run by a "family man" and suggested that then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is "separated" from Irish history because of his Indian heritage.

He also made comments claiming that some women were "f****** scum" and suggestions that "loads" of underage girls were blackmailing men by having sex with them and demanding sums of money of up to €100,000.

Councillor David McManus is now calling on Sinn Fein leaders to address the situation and accused them of throwing local councillors "under the bus".

He said: "Sinn Fein's latest decision raises more questions - why was this Councillor re-admitted by Sinn Fein in the first place? How can he be re-admitted as an official councillor representing the party but then can't be nominated for Mayor?

"The Sinn Fein leadership are responsible for this and now they are trying to throw their local Councillors under the bus. I would call for Mary Lou McDonald to make a full statement on this matter, it's time for answers, not reviews."
