Dublin set to announce James McCarthy as new football captain

James McCarthy is set to be announced as the new Dublin captain for the 2022 championship campaign when it begins this weekend in Wexford.

McCarthy, who has eight All Ireland medals will lead Dublin into the 2022 campaign as they look to reclaim the Sam Maguire after losing to May in last year's semi-final.

In recent times, the Dublin panel has lost a tremendous amount of experience from their previous All Ireland final appearances.

In the current squad, only McCarthy and Mick Fitzsimmons are the only players with 8 All Ireland championships.

Dublin manager Dessie Farrell currently has two major injury concerns ahead of the weekends game.

Both Con O'Callaghan and Evan Comerford are doubts for the weekend game against Wexford.

O'Callaghan suffered an ankle injury in January and played no part in the league campaign while Comerford has been out with a shoulder injury since February.

It's been a less than stellar year for the Dubs after they suffered relegation to Division 2 after losing to Monaghan in Clones thanks to a last-minute free to win the game.
