Dublin selector Greg Kennedy that interrupted play in Kilkenny clash set to receive a ban

Greg Kennedy is set to be hit with a ban for Dublin’s meeting with Wexford on Sunday after his cameo against Kilkenny.

The Dublin hurling selector, who acts as the team’s runner, was at the centre of a bizarre incident just before half-time in his side’s five-point loss at Nowlan Park on Saturday when he intercepted a short free that Kilkenny’s TJ Reid attempted to play to teammate Billy Ryan.

He was ordered off the field by referee Cathal McAllister, though the Cork official didn’t send him to the stand and Kennedy continued as the runner for the remainder of the game, though Kilkenny boss Brian Cody gave him a tongue-lashing for his intervention.

British people are baffled as hurling returns to Sky Sports for the summer

There are a number of headings under which the Central Competitions Control Committee could possibly reprimand the former Galway hurler, but it appears as though he will be pulled up for “disruptive conduct by players, team officials or supporters”, an offence for which the penalty is “at the discretion of the council or committee-in-charge”.

That means that the members of the CCCC can make the call as to what the punishment should be though, at the very least, it’s likely that Kennedy will be proposed for a suspension that will preclude him from acting as ‘maor foirne’ for Sunday’s visit of Wexford to Parnell Park and possibly beyond.

Dublin manager Mattie Kenny defended Kennedy after the game, saying it was “just a reaction when the ball came over his head”.
