Dublin's ugliest building, Hawkins House, finally set to be demolished nearly four years after original plans

Dublin's ugliest building is finally set to be demolished almost four years after original plans were announced.

Located on the corner of Tara Street and Poolbeg Street and built in 1962, Hawkins House which stands 11 storeys tall will be levelled after confirmation of original plans that were raised in the summer of 2016.

Demolition and redevelopment permission has been granted with contractors having until next week to bid for the tumble of the former Department of Health headquarters.

The Office of Public Works has set a deadline of May 14 for contractors to submit their tenders according to The Irish Times.

The new building is believed to be reduced to 10 storeys and will feature more office space than its predecessor.

Speaking in 2016 when the demolition was first mentioned, Minister Sean Carney said at the time: "It is clear that Hawkins House is now obsolete and no longer meets the demand for modern flexible workspace.

"The development of this site will provide up to 60% more office space and will offer significant savings in running costs."
