Dublin's most overcrowded hospital as Health Minister warns it will get 'worse'

St Vincent's University Hospital on the southside is Dublin's most overcrowded hospital as a record number of patients were left waiting on trolleys yesterday.

It comes as Health Minister Stephen Donnelly warned the bleak situation is "likely to get worse" as the system is "likely to see more pressure". He described the overcrowding as a "perfect storm" of flu, RSV, Covid as well as normal demand for services.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation said there were 931 admitted patients waiting for hospital beds - 171 higher than the previous record set in December. The total number across the country dropped to 838 this morning.

There were 240 patients left waiting on trolley's this morning across all the hospitals in the Dublin area. St Vincent University Hospital had the highest Dublin figure with 45 admitted patients waiting for hospital beds this morning.

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital had the second highest with 43 patients waiting in trolleys while St James' Hospital had the third highest with 39.

The National Children's Hospital in Tallaght had the lowest with just two patients waiting for a hospital bed. Families of patients stuck in the overrun hospital shave warned there are "trolleys everywhere".
