Dublin's most battered bridge claims first victim of new year after truck left with significant damage at infamous overpass

Dublin's most battered bridge has claimed its first victim of the new year after a truck was left with significant damage at the overpass.

The Shanty Bridge on the Blakestown Road in Mulhuddart has grown a reputation as one of the most infamous bridges in the capital.

The notorious Mulhuddart structure that takes the N3 across the Blakestown Road saw over a dozen accidents last year as truckers were frequently caught out by the troublesome 2.6m clearance.

Safety measures - including a new electronic warning sign that some locals claim isn't always turned on - have so far failed to halt the spate of crashes at the notorious black spot.

The most recent crash took place in December, while its scariest episode was when 15 schoolchildren were injured with ten needing hospital treatment after the bus they were travelling in struck the accident-prone bridge in January 2019.

The Bridge even has a Facebook page set up to document the many trials and tribulations of unlucky motorists that stumble into unfortunate incidents.

And Ireland's Most Battered Bridge brought us news of the latest accident this evening.

The white truck in question reversed away after seemingly smashing head first into the bridge with significant damage, buckling the top and popping a side door off its hinges.

"First bridge strike of the year," their post read, along with today's date, with video footage taken in the aftermath of the incident - though one local in the replies insisted that it was "at least the third".

Another simply commented with a GIF of American artist DJ Khaled simply saying "Another one".

Dublin Live have contacted An Garda Siochana about this latest smash.
