Dublin's first alcohol-free pub The Virgin Mary to open on Capel Street this week

Dublin is getting its first ever alcohol-free bar that will only sell non-boozy beverages.

The Virgin Mary is opening on Capel Street on Friday and will operate between normal pub hours.

It has sworn to only serve drinks that have zero percent alcohol and will make cocktails with only alcohol free mixes.

The bar’s owner Vaughan Yates told The Guardian: “When I mention this concept to friends, the first thing they do is laugh and ask why I’d do this in one of the bar capitals of Europe.”

Yates saw a gap in the market for this unusual bar as he saw older non-drinkers getting fed up with the same drinks in every bar.

He wanted to give more choice for those who choose not to drink instead of the standard fizzy drink or coffee.

Yates said: “There’s a bit of a culture shift, people are becoming more aware of what they’re consuming.”

He added: “By nine, 10 o’clock in a (traditional) bar it’s very loud; there can be noise and chaos, here you can still be having a conversation at 10 o’clock and still be making sense.”

Yates and his business partner Oisin Davis saw a demand for non-alcoholic drinks and a spot for non-drinkers to spend a night out and their idea came to life.
