Dublin road closed as 100s of frightened locals evacuated for hours while army and Gardai swarm Swords area to deal with suspect bomb

Hundreds of frightened locals were evacuated from their homes on Monday as Gardai and the Army swarmed the area to deal with what they believed to be a suspected bomb threat.

The residents were forced out onto the streets on the Malahide Road in Swords yesterday from around 1pm to 4pm.

The busy stretch of road from Mountgorry was shut off also with several checkpoints put in place by the armed officers.

One scared local, fearing for his life, told Dublin Live that they had been informed of a plausible bomb threat after a suspect device had been discovered by a neighbour on the green in the area.

The throng of Gardai and Army personnel tackled the suspect device at around 4pm with a spokesman for the Military deeming it a hoax threat.

A Garda spokesman added: "A call was received that a suspect device was present and the Explosive Ordnance Squad was called in.

"Upon examination of the device, it was found to be nonviable."

He added: "No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing."
