Dublin restaurants to sell 'surprise bags' to tackle food waste

Food waste is thought to be one of the biggest contributors to climate change, so Dublin restaurants are combating that by introducing customers to 'surprise bags'.

Hungry Dubs will now have the chance to pick up a bag of surprise goodies from a number of Dublin restaurants and cafes, and all at a discounted price.

Food waste app Too Good To Go has now launched in Ireland. The app is designed to allow businesses in Dublin and around the country sell food that would otherwise go to waste. We, as the customers, can then save the food by purchasing surprise bags for a discounted price.

If you've been wanting to discover new eateries around the city, this seems like a great opportunity to do so. Some of the restaurants and cafes you will find on the app are KC Peaches, Tang, Cornucopia, Toonsbridge, Camerino, Soup Dragon and more.

The app arrives in Ireland to tackle the country's significant contribution to food waste. Research suggests that much of Ireland's food waste costing €300 million is avoidable. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that 250,000 tonnes of food waste are generated annually by commercial food businesses such as restaurants, shops and workplace canteens.

Too Good To Go Co-Founder Jamie Crummie said, "There’s a natural alignment for our app in Ireland.

"By saving a Surprise Bag on their way home from work or on their way to meet friends, they [customers] are doing their part and getting some delicious food in the process."

The app is now available to download for people in Ireland, meaning we can start to pick up surprise bags from some great Dublin restaurants and cafes.
