Dublin residents evacuated from their homes for second time in two weeks over suspected pipe bomb

Residents in north Dublin were evacuated from their homes for the second time in less than two weeks due to a suspected pipe bomb in the garden of a house that had been previously targeted.

Homeowners in the Poppintree area of Ballymun were told to leave their homes at around 8:30pm on Saturday night and were still out in the fierce winds of Storm Jorge near midnight.

The Knowth Court area of the estate was sealed off with the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit on site for several hours, Dublin Live reports.

After an examination of the device, the EOD were able to declare the situation a hoax.

The Irish Mirror understands that the same house was targeted on February 19 when a suspected pipe bomb was left in the garden.

A garda spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: “We attended the scene of an incident last night Saturday 29 February, 2020 at Knowth Court, Ballymun.

“A device was located in the garden of a house and Gardaí cordoned off the area and contacted the EOD team.”

She added: “EOD arrived and after examination of the device, it was declared a hoax.

“Items were handed over to Gardaí and investigations are ongoing.”
