Dublin remembers: When you could ice skate all year round in Dolphin's Barn

Take a trip down memory lane with us to former Dublin days as we look back at a place where Dubliners used to enjoy going to and will have made precious memories down through the years.

In days gone by, Dublin 8 used to be home to the Leinster Cinema on Cork Street for over thirty years and later on the ice skating rink.

The Leinster Cinema first opened its doors way back in November 1936 with seating for 1,250 and screened many films over the years for those who travelled from near and far.

If you were lucky enough to have experienced this era growing up in the capital, you will fondly remember spending many Saturday afternoons heading down to the Leinster Cinema to catch the latest film with your family or friends.

Sadly, the cinema stopped operating in 1968 but thankfully the building wasn't left idle for too long as it was converted into Ireland's first indoor ice skating rink.

As well as being remembered as a venue to watch the big screen, the Dolphin's Barn site was renowned for its ice skating rink which was open all year round. Many generations would have learned how to ice skate there and possibly experienced their first taste of stitches too!

Not only was the entertainment destination a popular spot with Dubliners throughout the '80s and '90s, but people would also come from all across the country to skate there.

Dublin is still not over the ice rink's closure in 2004. The former building where a lot of fond memories were made was demolished and today apartments can be found in its place.
