Dublin pubs: Yet another Dublin bar closes due to new Covid-19 restrictions

Another Dublin pub has made the difficult decision to close their doors during what is usually the busiest trading week of the year.

The Harcourt Street bar said that they will not be able to open until the restrictions lift but hope to welcome back customers in the New Year.

Club Conradh na Gaeilge is an Irish speaking pub in the heart of Dublin city and the latest institution to close up shop before Christmas.

Management thanked customers for their support during 2019 and wished Dubliners a Happy Christmas.

Loyal customers were disappointed to hear the news but commended the pub on the incredibly difficult decision.

During lockdown, the historic meeting point called on the public to help keep their doors open.

They were left in a sticky situation when they had bought stock ahead of a planned reopening that never came to be.

The campaign gained serious support and highlighted the importance of an Irish speaking pub in the capital.

Co-chairperson, Emma Ní Chearúil previously spoke to Dublin Live about the need for public support.

She said: "It's definitely given us like a renewed sense of the importance of the space and the strength of the community around it.

“I think beforehand we knew what was there and you would pop in and it was lovely, but I don't think we appreciated how much people would miss it.”

The pub has been an important meeting point for people like Constance Markievicz and Michael Collins.

Emma said: "There’s a tunnel out the back which apparently Michael Collins used to escape from Trinity College back in the day.

“It was kind of used as a meeting point.

"We actually have a book signing when you go in.

“It has out names on it now, but if you go back far enough we have books dating back to say the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s.

“People like Constance Markievicz would have signed at one point.”

Under new government restrictions, all restaurants and bars excluding takeaway and delivery must close at 8pm.
